Solar PV

Generate your own electricity and reduce your energy bills.

Solar PV is a technology that uses sunlight to generate electricity. A Solar PV panel uses photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electricity. Sunlight is absorbed into the panel and converted to electricity by an inverter in your home ready for use with your everyday energy needs.

Solar PV is a cost-effective way to reduce your energy bills and payback is reduced due to high utility cost with many systems being fully repaid to you within 5 years.*

Our use of home energy has increased over the past 2 years with many more people working from home than pre-pandemic. Couple this with an increased appetite for technology it makes sense to micro-generate your own electricity.

We can design systems to complement the use of air source heap pumps and we actively promote a setup which uses a relay to turn on the heating to use up any spare electric being generated by the solar PV panels. Should your home not require heat at this point the energy is sent to hot water.

All homes use electricity, we can help you determine your energy needs and likely consumption and design a system to suit. We can recommend battery storage if your lifestyle depicts that you are out all day or you have varied shift patterns. It may be that you will use all the electricity.

Solar panels react to the visible light spectrum. This means, if it is light enough to see, there’s enough light for them to start generating electricity. The stronger the sunlight, the more power solar panels will generate
Solar panels produce more electricity in summer, which can make it seem like they need warmer weather to work. This isn’t the case, it is just that stronger sunlight and warmer temperatures often go hand in hand. In fact, if the temperature gets too hot (or too cold), they become less efficient. We get over 8 hours of sunlight a day all year round and do not often experience extreme temperatures, the UK is well suited to solar power.
Solar panels will work on all roofs that do not face North. The optimal roof direction is South however we often design systems that have panels on multiple elevation roofs incorporating an east west split. Using optimisers, we can maximise solar energy captured and available for use.

We can recommend battery storage if your lifestyle depicts that you are out all day or you have varied shift patterns. It maybe that you will use all the electricity you produce, and battery storage would not be of benefit, we will advise you with no hard sell. Battery storage can also be used for off peak charging, meaning you can store cheap electricity purchased at night for use during the day.

Planning permission is only required if your home is in a conservation area, or your home is listed. Planning permission is also required if panels are installed on flat roofs or are ground mounted.

In all other scenarios planning permission is not required.

Government grants and incentives

The export tariff is an option to sell your unused electricity that is generated back to the grid. Rates do vary for the export and can be as high as 12p per KWh.

We have access to the Governments Energy Company Obligation scheme and can offer funding through this if you meet certain criteria and your home is electrically heated.
