Solid wall insulation

Internal wall insulation, also known as solid wall insulation, is an effective way of keeping heat from escaping through the walls. This product would suit homes not suitable for cavity fill.

This type of insulation is usually recommended for homes built before 1920 that do not have a cavity and are solid wall constructed. This procedure is for solid wall properties and timber frame, if your home is of cavity construction, we suggest you explore cavity wall insulation.

Solid wall properties can be tricky to heat as the wall is a direct cold bridge to the outside. There are a few options to insulate properties that are not cavity constructed.

Savings and benefits of solid wall insulation

According to the energy saving trust up to 35% of a homes heat is lost through its walls. With huge increases to energy bills and over all cost of living it is now more important than ever to reduce waste and reducing heat waste is one way to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Currently all energy saving measures are zero rated for VAT. This zero rating is set to run until 2027 to promote energy saving measures such as solid wall insulations.

External wall insulation

External wall insulation involves adding a rigid insulation board, usually PIR, to the outside of your property before a 2-coat render system is applied. Given the nature of installing externally the costs are higher than with internal wall insulation.

The costs are higher due to a number of factors.

Generally, PIR insulation board suitable for external wall insulation (100mm) is more expensive that systems used internally.
The property needs to have scaffolding erected to enable the works to take place in a safe manner.
Roof lines may need to be extended, quite often solid wall properties do not have soffits and therefore roof lines need to be extended to protect the top of the insulation being installed
Rainwater goods will be affected and need altering to allow for external wall insulation to be installed.
External wall insulation systems will need to be installed to meet below your floor level to reduce cold bridging

As a ballpark figure external wall insulation generally costs around £150 a square meter.

Internal wall insulation

Internal wall insulation involves adding a layer of insulation to the inside of your home and this is achieved by using several approved systems. The preferred system is to install framework to external walls internally and install sheet mineral wool battens within the frame. A vapour barrier is then added before plasterboard, replacement skirtings and re-plastering. As a ballpark figure internal wall insulation generally costs around £60 a square meter.
